The mission, ministry and maintenance of St Mary the Virgin Church is dependent on the giving of its members. Once we appreciate how much God has given us in practical and spiritual ways, we are compelled to respond to his generosity through the use of our time, our talents and our financial resources.
Christian teaching suggests that in all these areas we are expected to give something to God's work according to our means. Every contribution however small or large brings us together in our shared purpose. We aim to give 5% of our income charitable concerns in this country and abroad. Among others we support Christian Aid, Welcare, Children's society, St Christopher's hospice and St. Catherine's hospice.
In 2009 and beyond, we face increasing costs and dwindling income, creating a financial deficit for the church, despite regular giving from almost all our congregation without whom we would be in a much worse position.
We need to raise more money to ensure the church is sustainable - c. £2000 in 2009 and up to £4000 in 2010 and subsequent years, due largely to increasing fixed costs. During 2009, we have raised awareness of our Financial status through a presentation of our financial standing.
We have a campaign to raise awareness of our need to reach a sustainable balance. An information leaflet -
Buckland -Can you benefit from being more involved in our community?
- was delivered to all houses in the Parish in February 2009 A more detailed presentation (PPT) was also compiled for those interested:
St Mary's Buckland - Parish Funding Programme
Further funds are required to enhance our facilities and to keep our church relevant in the 21st Century. Future needs are toilets in the churches, ability to improve the use and flexibility of the internal space, and maintenance of the heating, lighting, decorating and sound system.
